Pakistan’s new panel chief follows Gandhi’s teachings
July 10, 2012 12:55:27 ISTPakistan’s new Chief Election Commissioner Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim was born in India’s Gujarat state where he attended lectures given by Mahatma Gandhi. He continues to be inspired by his teachings of non-violence and peace, a media report said.
Ebrahim, born Feb 12, 1928 in Ahmedabad in Gujarat, was Monday appointed as the chief election commissioner following a parliamentary consensus.
“Ebrahim attended the Gujrat Vidyapith and received an undergraduate degree in law in 1949. He also studied courses based on philosophy and attended lectures given by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. It is believed that his advocacy for non-violence and peace comes from Gandhi’s teachings,” Dawn reported.
Ebrahim migrated to Pakistan in 1950.
He is an eminent Pakistani jurist, constitutional expert, former federal law minister, former judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan and former governor of Sindh.
