PM dedicates India’s maiden Trans-shimpment terminal

Vallarpadam, Kochi : Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday dedicated India’s first International Container Trans-shipment Terminal at Vallarpadam Island in Kerala, describing it as a “milestone in logistic infrastructure development.”

” It is a symbol of how public?private partnership can contribute to public good. And it will be an enduring symbol of the close ties we wish to build with our extended neighbours in West Asia, particularly the United Arab Emirates,” the PM said.?

With this terminal the exporters in the country can have access mainline containers vessel, the PM said whilst inaugurating the first phase of the over Rs 3,200 crore terminal under the Cochin Port expansion project.?

Dubai Ports World built the terminal at a cost of around Rs 1,600 crore. The terminal can handle upto 1 million TEUs (twenty foot equivalent units) of cargo per year.
