DMK, PMK rejoin in poll pact in Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu’s ruling party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Friday entered into an electoral pact with the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) for coming Assembly elections in the southern state of India.

Chief Minister M K Karunanidhi leading the DMK conceded 31 seats in the state legislative assembly and a Rajya Sabha seat to the PMK led by S Ramadoss, who disclosed the seat sharing pact wit the ruling party.

There are 234 Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu.

The PMK boss said he had gone to the DMK leader house for inviting him of his grandson’s wedding where the deal was struck. ” We have been given 31 assembly seats and a Rajya Sabha seat,” Ramadoss said after emerging out from Karunanidhi’s Gopalapuram residence here.

PMK was part of the DMK-led Democratic Progressive Alliance in 2006 assembly elections. PMK had won 18 out of 31 seats it contested five years ago.

The PMK severed its tie with DMK in July after differences surfaced between the two. PMK had contested the 2009 Lok Sabha elections as an ally of the AIADMK, but drew a blank.
