Coins in memory of Dr Rajendra Prasad
It is matter of satisfaction that Union government remembered country?s first President Dr Rajendra Prasad in his 125th birth-anniversary year by issuing two commemorative coins in denominations of rupees 100 and rupees 5. But it is senseless that newly released coins and coin-sets on 28th February 2010 were not made available to members of general public on date of release of new coins.
System should be to develop coin-collection on lines of philately by making available new coins at face-value right on date of release itself from convenient centres like all branches of Reserve bank of India, philatical centres and selected bank-branches of nationalised and private banks. Presently higher-priced 100-rupee coins are never made available at face value.
Likewise coin-sets should also be made available at these counters right from date of release of new coins abolishing cumbersome and costly procedure of advance-booking of coin-sets that too after some years of release of coins thereby killing very purpose of commemorating an occasion. For simplicity only one highest-priced ?Proof? category of coin-sets comprising of all denominations of new-released coins should be there abolishing other categories including ?uncirculated? one.
Popularising coin-collection on lines of philately, will give net revenue-earning because such coin-sets never come in actual circulation. Educational institutions and others can be motivated to give coin-sets as prizes in functions instead of trophies and momentos.
