‘Peepli Live’ makes it to Oscars
Mumbai : Peepli Live, Aamir Khan’s celluloid black comedy on farmers’ suicide in India, has made to the Oscars with its official entry at the 83rd Academy Awards to be held in the US next year.
Peepli, a dusty Indian village, makes it to the headlines leading to a media frenzy when two poor farmers lose their land over an unpaid debt after the poor monsoon rains.
A local politician suggests they commit suicide so their families get compensation.The movie is a satire on farmer suicides in India and how media and politicians tackle the issue.
Reportedly, the film even earned appreciation from the Prime Minister of India as it was screened exclusively for him and his family members.
Directed by journalist-turned-director Anusha Rizvi, the film stars theatre actors and was shot in a small village in Madhya Pradesh.
Earlier, Aamir Khan’s ?Laagan? was shortlisted in a category of five in 2002 for Oscars but lost to Bosnian war film ?No Man`s Land?.
