Left concerned over fair West Bengal elections
The Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) along with other Left parties submitted a memorandum to the Election Commission of India raising concerns over the alleged nexus between the Trinamool Congress and the Maoists in context of the upcoming West Bengal elections.
They urged the Commission that significant challenges remain for holding fair elections, given the “spree of violence let loose by the Trinamool Congress with active collusion of the Maoists” in the Jangalmahal area.
The parties accused the alleged Trinamool-Maoist nexus of targeted killings of activists, leaders and organisers of the Left parties.
They stated that the campaign of violence by the Maoists were proving to be lethal because of the overt and covert support they receive from the Trinamool Congress.
Since June 2009, when the Central paramilitary forces have started joint operations with the state police, the situation gradually improved which is evident from the large number of arrests of Maoists including their top leadership in the state, they said.
However, the threat of violence still looms large as the Maoist terror apparatus is yet to be completely dismantled.
The parties felt constraint to point out that the Prime Minister?s observation, ?Maoist violence is the single biggest threat to the internal security of the country? should be unexceptionable to everybody concerned.
