Rouvanjit Rawla: Court concludes hearing La Marts principal

A Kolkata court on Friday concluded hearing of the petition filed by the principal of Kolkata?s La Martiniere for Boys, Sunirmal Chakraborty, charged in the suicide case of 13-year-old Rouvanjit Rawla.

The sessions court adjourned the hearing till Jan 31.

“Facts speak for themselves. While we have been focusing on corporal punishment, this isn’t the only case. I don’t know if the new laws will strengthen the case, but they should help the children,” Rawla?s father Ajay told CNN-IBN news channel.

Earlier, on Nov 19, the court said Chakraborty will be accused of abetment to suicide.

In a significant step by the court, it decided that Chakraborty, who canned Rouvanjit which finally led to the boy killing himself, should be charged with abetment to suicide, media reports said.

The principal and three other teachers of La Martiniere for Boys were arrested on October three last year for the suicide of eighth-standard student Rouvanjit.

Complaints were filed against the teachers by the boy’s father, Ajay Rawla.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has held the school responsible for the suicide of its student Rouvanjit Rawla and stated that the environment in the school was ?not suitable? for children.

Rouvanjit had hanged himself on February 12 this year and his parents have alleged that their son was driven to the extreme step after being repeatedly subjected to humiliation at the hands of the teachers at school.

The school?s principal Sunirmal Chakravarti had confessed before Kolkata bishop Ashok Biswas ? who heads the Church of North India that runs the school ? of canning the child, earlier reports said.

He initially defended his action but under pressure from media and other organizations, he apologized for his action.
