Railway minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday laid the foundation stone for an air conditioned-container and bogie manufacturing factory at Budge Budge outside Kolkata.
The Railways will invest about Rs 59.3 crore for this factory, Banrejee said.
An area of approximately 3.5 acres has been taken to set up the bogie manufacturing works.
This factory will manufacture air conditioned containers on a demand driven basis and 600 FIAT bogie frames per annum on a regular basis.
FIAT bogies provides superior riding quality, higher safety and have low maintenance requirements, the railway ministry said.
The work for this factory will be looked over by RITES, a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Railways.
RITES has already started work to quickly complete the project in coordination with Eastern Railway and the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala, Punjab.
