Tata Power’s 800 MW thermal plant operational in Gujarat

Tata Power Thursday announced the synchronization of its 800 MW Unit-II of the 4,000 MW Mundra Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) in Gujarat.

With this, Tata Power’s total power generation capacity now stands at 6,099 MW, reinforcing its position as the country’s largest private power producer.

The total 6,099 MW includes 5,247 MW through thermal and the remaining 852 MW through clean sources like hydro, wind and solar energy.

The UMPP’s Unit-I was commissioned in March this year.

Managing Director Anil Sardana said the 4,000 MW UMPP at Mundra heralds the entry of 800 MW super-critical boiler technology which is eco-friendly and fuel efficient.

“This technology and the choice of unit sizes helps save fuel for the project and cut down greenhouse gas emissions up to 15 percent compared to a sub-critical coal-fired power stations. In addition, the choice of coal significantly lowers sulphur emissions to virtually insignificant levels,” Sardana explained.

As compared to other sub-critical plants in India, this project will use 1.7 million tonnes of less coal per year while generating the same quantum of power.

This not only makes available more coal in the long run for power generation but also reduces carbon emissions, he said.

Supplementing this are other eco-friendly initiatives to limit the UMPP’s environmental impact and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
