Week after leg crushed by bus, girl dies

Chandigarh  :  A week after her leg was crushed under the wheels of a state transport bus near her school here, Anupama Sarkar lost her battle for life at the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) here Tuesday.

The victim, aged 16 and the only child of her parents, was admitted to the PGIMER soon after her accident but underwent surgery only three days later.

Her family blamed PGIMER doctors for their daughter losing her life alleging that she was not operated in time by the doctors leading to gangrene infection which spread in her body.

“We had considered the doctors to be gods for us. But they let us down badly. They did not attend to her initially. First her leg was amputated and finally she lost the battle for life. She was our only hope. She was such a bright student,” said an inconsolable Amit Sarkar, father of Anupama, Tuesday.

Anupama had slipped while getting into a Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU) bus near her school in Sector 18 here July 17. The bus driver drove on, crushing her leg. She was immediately rushed to the PGIMER where doctors took three days to perform surgery on her.

A PGIMER spokesperson said that Anupama could not be operated upon earlier as there was a heavy rush of trauma patients on whom surgeries were to be performed.

Anupama had got admission in the commerce stream of class 9 of the Government Senior Secondary School for Girls in Sector 18 earlier this year.
