2G scam: Subramanian Swamy defends Manmohan Singh, blames Law Ministry
Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy, in a U-turn on Monday, spoke in favour of Manmohan Singh over the 2G fiasco, saying that the Prime Minister was most likely wrongly advised by the Law Ministry over the case.
Coming out of the Supreme Court on Monday, where his petition on the 2G scam is being heard, Swamy said that neither the Law Ministry nor the law officers briefed the prime minister correctly on what his response should be to Swamy’s letters seeking sanction to prosecute former Telecom minister A Raja in the 2G scam.
In a nine-page affidavit to the Court’s registry, Swamy, who has dragged the Prime Minister to the apex court over the 2G scam, said: “It is regrettable that law officers of the government had failed to apprise the PM of the law of the land that he must decide on the sanction question only on the material provided by me.”
“The Prime Minister made independent inquiries on the substance of my material provided in the these letters, which is against the judgements of this court,” he added.
The Prime Minister, in response to SC’s questioning his delay in responding to Swamy’s letters, had submitted before the Court that he was advised by the Law ministry to wait for the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) to complete its probe into the 2G scam.
