The Delhi High Court Thursday directed the MCD to file an affidavit explaining the reason for delay in constructing special enclosures on the Yamuna river bank for immersion of idols during festivals.
A bench of Justice Vipin Sanghi asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to explain by May 8 why it failed to comply with its earlier order of 2006.
The court in 2006 directed the MCD to make the enclosures while hearing a petition on keeping the river Yamuna clean.
Justice Sanghi’s order came on a contempt petition filed by NGO Tapas that told the court that “despite the 2006 order of this court and also the undertaking given by the MCD to the court in 2009 for construction of 13 special permanent enclosures, only four temporary enclosures had been made by the agency so far”.
The MCD in 2009 had given an undertaking to the court saying that it will complete the project by 2011.
