CWG Crisis: Manmohan Singh meeting M S Gill, S. Jaipal Reddy

New Delhi : As the Commonwealth jitters continued to haunt India, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is meeting Union Sports Minister M S Gill and Union Urban Development Minister S. Jaipal Reddy for a crisis management meeting on Thursday evening.

The Prime Minister called the meeting after the Games started falling apart with accidents, pullouts, poor hygiene standards and the mounting criticism by the Opposition parties and the participating countries and performers.

The opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier demanded that the Prime Minister should step in to control the situation.

Earlier during the day, the security arrangements for the Commonwealth Games (CWG) were reviewed at a meeting presided by Union Home Minister P.Chidambaram.

Union Home Secretary, Secretary (Sports), Commissioner of Police, Delhi, representatives of the Organising Committee and others were present.

While taking note of the delays, the Home Minister set certain timelines for the Organising Committee and other authorities to complete the works.

Putting up a brave front in the face of a foot overbridge collapse near a main venue and the slamming of the facilities and hygiene standards by participating countries, the Commonwealth Games Organizing Committee (OC) said everything would be delivered on time.

OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi said he takes criticism on his stride and would deliver the Games.
