Delhi court orders protection for married couple
New Delhi : The Delhi High Court has asked the city police to provide protection to a couple who had eloped and married against the wishes of the women’s parents.
Justice G.S. Sistani, observing that the woman is a major, allowed her to go with her husband and asked Neb Sarai police to provide protection to the couple.
The couple approached the court for protection from the woman’s family members, who allegedly threatened them.
On Nov 7, the woman’s parents had registered a complaint against the man for kidnapping his daughter. Her father alleged that her daughter was going to get married on Nov 21 and the man had kidnapped her before her marriage.
However, the woman told the court she fears her parents will kill her for “honour” and she had married that man four years ago but did not disclose it to her family.
She also said that when she told her parents about her marriage, they fixed her wedding with some other person, so she ran away.
On the other hand, her father told the court that she had not disclosed anything about her being married to the man and now wedding invitations had been sent and all the preparation made.
The court also asked police to record the statement of the woman and file a report in the court to quash the kidnapping complaint.
