Delhi Government announces compensation for building collapse

Amid chaos and wails of the survivors the Delhi Government on Tuesday announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of those killed and Rs one lakh to those wounded in Monday’s east Delhi building collapse.

The toll in the accident touched 65 while many more were feared trapped under debris.

More than 80 people were injured the when the 5-storey apartment flattened like a house of cards on Monday evening.

Lieutenant Governor Tejindra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit visited the scene of accident at Lakshmi Nagar and spent time with the unhurt survivors and rescuers as well.

They said punitive action would be taken against those found guilty for the disaster.

Different versions of the accident are being offered by ministers, technocrats, bureaucrats and police officials while the sobbing relatives of the dead and injured have joined rescuers to look for survivors under the rubbles.
