India to bring back diplomat accused of wife beating

New Delhi : Anil Verma, the Indian diplomat in London accused of wife beating, would be brought back to India, a national TV channel reported on Sunday.

According to NDTV quoting sources in the Ministry of External Affairs, the diplomat is being transferred back to India.

The ministry reportedly took a strong view of the incident in which Verma had used his diplomatic immunity in UK to escape law after allegedly assaulting his wife.

There also media reports in UK which said the wife of the diplomat, Paromita Verma, has gone into hiding with her five-year-old son fearing she might be forced back to India and sought the permission of the UK government to stay there on humanitarian grounds.

Anil Verma is an IAS of the West Bengal cadre, who is the third senior-most diplomat and Minister (economic) in the Indian High Commission in the UK,

India’s External Affairs Ministry (MEA) a week ago said it was carefully looking into the incident of Verma allegedly escaping prosecution for his diplomatic immunity despite assaulting his wife.

The Daily Mail in UK had reported that the diplomat had claimed immunity from prosecution after being questioned by police over claims that he assaulted his wife at their official residence.

The diplomat allegedly assaulted his wife after a heated argument at the couple?s home in Golders Green, North-West London, the paper reported.
