IPL CEO Sundar Raman likely to depose against Lalit Modi

New Delhi : Indian Premier League (IPL) chief executive Sundar Raman is likely to give damaging evidence against suspended IPL chairman Lalit Modi in the BCCI Disciplinary Committee meeting.

A top Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official said that Raman will be a witness since he was involved in the finacial dealings of the IPL with Modi.

During the disciplinary committee meeting here at the residence of Jyotiraditya Scindia, one of the members in the panel, Modi’s counsel Sailes Mendon said Tuesday that he will cross-examine Raman regarding the evidence.

Modi’s lawyer, however, was not happy with the meeting at Scindia’s residence.

In a statement BCCI admitted: “We have also received an e-mail communication from Mr. G Gopal of M/s. Wadia Gandhy & Co., Solicitors suggesting that the BCCI?s insistence for an hearing at Mr. Scindia?s residence is solely designed to prejudice Mr. Modi?s defence and present a fait accompli.”

The Indian cricket board, however, clarified: The BCCI was not even aware of the illness of Mr. Scindia. It was Mr. Scindia who had informed one of us- Mr. Arun Jaitley- telephonically today morning and this fact was brought to the notice of Mr. Chirayu Amin and all others present at the enquiry at the time of hearing.”

Four witnesses were present. Three of them have come from England and one from South Africa.

“While considering the request of Mr. Mendon, we suggested that we can resume the hearing at 9.00 a.m. in the morning so that the witnesses who have come from England could be examined expeditiously and these witnesses do not have to come back again. However, Mr. Mendon requested the hearing be fixed at 2.00 pm tomorrow.

“It is made clear that this is the last opportunity to Mr. Modi for cross examination of these witnesses. The hearing will commence at 2.00 p.m on 15th September 2010. The venue of the hearing will be at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi. If there is any change in the venue, it will be communicated in advance,” the statement said.
