JPC demand stalls Parliament; govt moots cutting session

New Delhi : Opposition stalled proceedings in both Houses of Parliament for all the ten working days of the Winter Session so far as reports on Thursday indicated that the government may recommend adjourned of the Parliament sine die with no solution to the impasse over Opposition?s demand for a JPC on 2G Spectrum scam in sight.

The Opposition parties in Lok Sabha as well as Rajya Sabha started slogan shouting as soon as the Houses met for the day.

The AIADMK MPs led the protests inside the Parliament and they were soon joined by other Opposition parties, including the BJP, SP and Shiv Sena.

The treasury bench members also added to the ruckus by noisy demands for sacking of Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa of the BJP over alleged land scams.

Outside the House, Samajwadi Party (SP) members took out a protest march from the gates of the Parliament to the Lok Sabha, led by party chief Mulayum Singh Yadav.

As the din continued, both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha were finally adjourned for the day.

The Opposition has been unrelenting in its demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the 2G Spectrum scam, while the government has refused to oblige, pointing that the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), headed by BJP?s Murli Manohar Joshi, will look into the scam.

Meanwhile, reports said that the government was mulling adjourning the House sine die as attempts, led by Union Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, to end the deadlock have failed.

The winter session, which began on November 9 and was scheduled to end on December 13, may now be short-terminated.

The ten day session so far has cost the state exchequer Rs 61.20 crore, with no business being transacted, official statistics have revealed.

The expenditure per minute has been calculated at Rs 26,000.

Out of the scheduled time of 48 hours in the first eight days, just 5.3 hours productive hours have been recorded.
