New Delhi  :  A 45-year-old businessman stabbed his wife to death here Wednesday after a dispute and later injured himself and his minor daughter for misleading the police with a story of robbery, officials said.

The incident was reported around 3 a.m. from west Delhi’s Hari Nagar area.

Hari Om Gupta, resident of B-9 at Asha Park area in Hari Nagar, slit the neck of his 40-year-old wife Ravinder Kaur after a dispute, police said.

“When he realized that his wife has died, he cooked up a story. He first hit his eight-year-old daughter, Khushi, and then slashed his wrist,” Deputy Commissioner of Police V. Renganathan told IANS.

“He then rushed towards ground floor and informed one of his neighbours that some robbers entered his house and killed his wife injuring him and his daughter when he resisted them,” Renganathan said.

Gupta, his wife and their daughter were rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital where Kaur was declared brought dead, said the officer. Gupta and his daughter were discharged after treatment.

During investigation, Khushi told police that his father killed her mother during an argument.

Following which, police quizzed Gupta, who runs an Ayurvedic clinic near his home.

“Gupta confessed his crime and said that in a fit of rage he stabbed his wife. He told police that two months ago they had a premature baby that died after few days of delivery,” said Renganathan.

“During the treatment of the new born child he had to spend too much money. The treatment was very expensive. Over this, he used to have verbal duel with his wife. On Wednesday early morning, they again started fighting over the issue and in rage he stabbed her,” said the officer.

A case of murder was registered at Hari Nagar police station and Gupta was arrested.
