New York court summons Kamal Nath on Sikh riots
Senior Congress leader and India’s new urban development minister Kamal Nath has been summoned by a New York court in a law suit filed against him by a Sikh group for his alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in the aftermath of Indira Gandhi’s death.
But what is worse for the minister are reports in Indian Express that Washington has refused to offer any diplomatic immunity to the Indian politician against whom there is no legal proceedings in India in the Sikh riots case, unlike other Congress politicians.
The Sunday Express quoting officials said the US State Department, responding to an Indian demarche asking Washington to intervene in the matter and annul the case, has argued that the matter is between Kamal Nath and the NGO, Sikhs for Justice.
“And that it doesn?t have any locus standi and, therefore, can?t intervene,” the report said.
