Old Yamuna bridge in Delhi closed after water surge

New Delhi : The Old Yamuna Bridge, linking eastern part of the city with New Delhi, remained closed for an indefinite period on Tuesday for rail and road traffic after water level of the Yamuna swelled alerting the disaster management officials to sound danger for low lying areas people in the national capital.

Both railway and road traffic would remain closed until the level of water receded, police guarding the ironed bridge said.

The water level was about 205.78 metre, about 95 cm above the danger mark of 204.83-metre.

The water level may further rise from flows of Hathanikund Barrage in Haryana.

Indian Railways have suspended traffic on the rails of old Yamuna bridge since 3 am and are diverting all the trains bound for Old Delhi Railway Station and towards the eastern part of the country through other routes.

The road traffic has been diverted to highway linking Delhi with Uttar Pradesh.
