Police appeals witnesses to help in DU killing

Under pressure to nab the killer of the Delhi University student who was shot dead near her college in broad daylight a day ago, the Delhi Police on Wednesday released a sketch of the suspect and appealed to any witness to come forward for assistance.

Delhi DCP HGS Dhaliwal said it was evident there were several witnesses who had seen the killer as the foot bridge on which the shooting incident took place was crowded with people.

Twenty-year-old Radhika Tanwar was shot dead by an unidentified assailant near her Ramlal Anand College in Delhi University?s South Campus on Tuesday.

?It happened in a ramp which is always crowded at that hour and it is impossible that they did not see him. Unfortunately many people were there who had seen but all said they did not see anything,? Dhaliwal said.

He appealed to witnesses to come forward to help the police and assured that all information will be kept secret.

Releasing a sketch of the suspect, the police officer said the assailant apparently had central partition of hair and was of brownish complexion and had worn a black T-shirt.

Revealing on the progress of investigation, Dhaliwal said the assailant apparently knew the victim and was aware of her movements.

?The assailant was aware of her movement. She used to take a bus from a fixed point,? he said.

The police is investigating personal enmity angle and is in touch with Radhika?s friends, classmates and close as well as distant family members.

Dhaliwal added that the family of Radhika was cooperating with the police.

Earlier on Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who has admitted on the lack on safety for women in Delhi, visited the family of Radhika.

Visiting the family at Naraina, the chief minister extended her sympathies to the aggrieved family and assured of nabbing the guilty.

She said the police has been directed to expedite investigations.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students from various colleges of South Campus of Delhi University gathered near ARSD College to protest Radhika?s killing.

The students raised slogans against the government and demanded that security be beefed up near the colleges, especially after dusk.

Girl students particularly pointed that women lacked security in the capital even though the chief minister was herself a woman.

Meanwhile, former TV-star and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha President Smriti Irani has demanded the resignation of Dikshit over rising crimes in the nation?s capital.

On International Women?s Day, when a student of Delhi University Radhika Tanwar was shot dead by an unknown assailant, the BJP women wing leader said that Dikshit must resign over her failure to curb crime.

?An admission by the Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit that ‘Delhi is unsafe for women’ highlights the sheer helplessness and incompetence of the Congress government in the state,? said the leader from the opposition party.

Irani said that the commitment to reducing crime in the region has been ?reduced to a mere lip service by the Delhi government and the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)?.
