New Delh : Union Home minister P Chidambaram on Friday expressed concern at the increase in the number of ?Jan Adalats? (people?s courts), organised by the Maoists, which have no sanction of law.
He said the number of such ?courts? have risen to 48 in the current year up to August, 2010, against 38 in the corresponding period last year, while the number of people executed under orders of such ?courts has risen from 11 to 21 this year.
?The CPI (Maoist) holds courts called ?Jan Adalats?, tries the ?accused?, sentences many of them to death, and executes them in full public view in order to strike terror in the hearts of the villagers,? Chidambaram said.
?Every one who swears by the rule of law must condemn these kangaroo courts and brutal executions,? he added.
The Union minister urged the media to highlight this aspect of the ?brutality? of the Maoists.
He further added that policemen and ?police informers? remained prime target of the Left-wing extremists.
