Supreme Court okays dyslexic boy?s adoption by US couple

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed an American couple to adopt a dyslexic child following a recommendation by an expert committee of doctors.

A bench of Justices Markandey Katju and TS Thakur permitted Craig Lallen Coates and Cynthia Ann Coates to adopt the child, Anil, with learning disabilities.

The expert committee told the court that the couple was financially sound to adopt the child and will be able to cater to his special needs, especially since the husband also had learning problems in childhood and his wife Cynthia had knowledge on how to deal with such a disability.

The committee was appointed following a suggestion by solicitor general and amicus curae Gopal Subramanium to the court in the course of the last hearing on August 30

The court also directed the Centre to constitute a panel to decide in future on such inter-country adoptions, particularly in cases of children with such disabilities.

Two lower courts had earlier rejected the American couple?s adoption plea, stating that they meant to adopt the child to exploit him as a domestic servant later.
