Suresh Kalmadi to attend meeting of GoM

New Delhi : Beleaguered Suresh Kalmadi, chairman of the organising committee of the Commonwealth Games, will attend the meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) here Monday.

The GOM, headed by Jaipal Reddy, will meet here for the first time after the conlusion of the Games.

?The Games have been staged really successfully but all complaints or alleged irregularities regarding transactions by any agencies must be thoroughly looked into,? Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy said.

The GOM, along with other deliberations, is likely to extend the terms of all officers sent on deputation to the Organising Committee, so that they are available while the probe into the OC’s conduct of the Commonwealth Games.

The GoM would look into aspects like work allocated to different government agencies, such as the Delhi Development Authority, and where they failed.

Earlier on Sunday, Kalmadi hit out at Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit for ‘casting aspersions’ on the conduct of the Committee.

”Delhi Chief Minister Mrs Sheila Dikshit’s aspersions on corruption in the Organising Committee Commonwealth Games 2010, Delhi are most disappointing and uncalled for. It is not right to deflect and point fingers at others when she must indulge in self-reflection oncorruption in her own departments,” Kalmadi said in a press statement.

Sheila Dikshit had hinted at corruption in the Organising Committee, which was headed by Kalmadi, and said no one should get away with it.

“She has said that the ways of the Organising Committee are mysterious whereas the Commonwealth Games chief Michael Fennell declared the conduct of the Games as exceptional and successful,” Kalmadi added.

While the Games concluded successfully and without any untoward incident and the foreign guests departed with a feel-good taste of Indian culture and hospitality, the shame the country was subjected to ahead of the Games was not forgotten with much of the finger pointing towards Kalmadi for the glitches.
