Yamuna rises alarmingly; don’t panic, says Govt.

New Delhi : The Delhi government on Friday said people should not panic even as the water level in the Yamuna is rising alarmingly and crossed the danger mark of 204.83 meters after Haryana released over eight lakh cusec water from the Hatnikund barrage.

The water level is expected to peak by this evening as the the disaster management authorities apprehended the swelling could even go upto 207 meters, which may flood low-lying areas of the national capital.

The government downplayed the need of additional boats and pumps in case of emergency and said there was no danger to the Commonwealth Games village.

The government, however, sought the help of the National Disaster Management Authority( NDMA) to deal with the situation.

“Delhi government is taking all precautionary measures to deal with the situation. Almost over 90 per cent people living in the low-lying areas have already been shifted to safer places. We are ready for any kind of situation,” Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit had said.

Although Haryana released around eight lakh cusec water in last two days, Dikshit said only 3.5 lakh cusec is expected to reach Delhi.
