Hearing in Rouvanjit Rawla case deferred till Friday

A Kolkata court on Thursday deferred till Friday the trial of the Principal and three other teachers of La Martiniere for Boys School for their alleged abetment to the suicide of .13-year-old Rouvanjit Rawla, who was a student of the elite
institution.

The accused, including principal Sunirmal Chakravarthi, had appeared before the court in the morning as directed earlier on Monday amid indications that they would be charged for abetment to suicide.

On Friday last, the sessions court concluded hearing of the petition filed by the principal.

Earlier, on Nov 19 last year, the court said Chakravarthi will be accused of abetment to suicide.

The principal and three other teachers of La Martiniere for Boys were arrested on October three last year for the suicide of eighth-standard student Rouvanjit.

Complaints were filed against the teachers by the boy’s father, Ajay Rawla.

The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has held the school responsible for the suicide of its student Rouvanjit Rawla and stated that the environment in the school was ?not suitable? for children.

Rouvanjit had hanged himself on Feb 12 last year and his parents have alleged that their son was driven to the extreme step after being repeatedly subjected to humiliation at the hands of the teachers at school.

The school?s principal had confessed before Kolkata bishop Ashok Biswas ? who heads the Church of North India that runs the school ? of caning the child, earlier reports said.

He initially defended his action but under pressure from media and other organizations, he apologized for his action.
