Goan Caltholics not drukards : Rajendra Talak

Panaji : Renowned Goa filmmaker Rajendra Talak has condemned Indian films portraying Goan Catholics as ?drunkards?, which labels negativity about the state.

?Why is that Catholic Pedros are boozers always? Why Perdros have to be Goan Pedro and not Pedros from other states,? Talak questioned.

The filmmaker was addressing a press briefing with the cast and crew of his movie ?O Maria?, which was premiered at the International Film Festival of India (2010) on Tuesday.

He said that his movie cleanses the state from the negative portrayal of Goan Catholics as ?boozers.?

?Hindi films portray a man as drunken Pedro that in turn tarnished the image of all Goan populace as drunkards, which is absolutely wrong,? he rued.

The filmmaker said he is most likely to organize a special screening for the Archbishop of Goa, politicians and bureaucrats.

The movie, starring America-born actor Cory Goldberg and Indian film actors including Shernaz Patel (popularly known as Kanta Bai), Sulabh Arya and Tiku Talsania, shows the bleak reality of Goa like drug peddling.

?There are drugs here and so many other problems for which only we are to be blamed. We are losing resources?this is though a universal problem but the greed of few locals has stained our state,? he said.

Talak said that the film aims to create awareness about Goa and to bring back its good image.

?The film can also set an example as the entire country is going through a bad phase with several scams expose, terrorists attacks, and other things? We want to reach to masses,? he said.

The filmmaker said that he is planning to screen the movie at Pune International Film Festival and has accordingly, applied for permission to do so.
