Camellia?s Burdwan medical hub opens in June

East India-based conglomerate Camellia Group is coming up with a Rs 500-crore integrated medical complex in West Bengal?s Burdwan district, the first phase of which, is expected to be unveiled by June this year.

At a cost of half the total investment, the first phase will include a 500-bed multi-speciality hospitality and a 250-seat medical college college with MBBS, dentistry and nursing disciplines.

?Construction on the hospital is almost complete, and we expect to open our doors by the end of February,? company managing director N R Dutta said at a press event here on Tuesday.

The facility will be spread across a 33.33 acre area, in Bud Bud, Burdwan, 150 km from Kolkata, which the group acquired in Dec 2009. The entire project is expected to be complete by 2013.

According to company estimates, the medical hub is expected to create direct employment for about 1,000 and indirect for about 3,000 people in a phased manner.

?We are an education sector group essentially, and we thought a learning hospital would be a good expansion project,? Dutta said.

Initially beginning with 100 seats in MBBS, 100 in Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and 50 in nursing, the medical school wants to increase seats and expand to postgraduate degrees by the second phase.

The West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS)-affiliated college has got all the clearances from the state government and currently is waiting for inspections by the Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India and the Indian Nursing Council.

?Once we get these clearances from New Delhi, we are ready to start our session from this year only,? Camellia corporate director D K Bhattacharya told IBNS on the sidelines of the press meet.
