Ashamed of brutalities on farmers: Sonia Gandhi
Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said the atrocities on the farmers in Greater Noida made her feel ashamed as she took on the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh over land acquisition.
Speaking here on the concluding day of the two-day convention of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC ) here, Sonia Gandhi said: “What has happened to the farmers in the Gautam Buddh Nagar has put us in shame.”
She took forward the agitation by Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi further and said Congress will fight for the cause of farmers.
She said the state of Uttar Pradesh has plunged into lawlessness and anarchy.
She said the Congress will place before Parliament quickly the land acquisition bill.
Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said his party will continue to fight against atrocities of Uttar Pradesh government in every village.
?Congress workers in UP are ready to give their blood and toil. Congress will fight for the poor. We have started in Bhatta-Parsaul, we will fight them [Mayawati government] in every village. We will drive out this government and show,? said the Gandhi scion a day before though his party backtracked from his earlier comment on rape and killings in Greater Noida to grab land.
He said it is not the fight for votes but the future of Uttar Pradesh. Rahul said he would fight for justice for all.
Rahul reached the affected Bhatta Parsaul village in Greater Noida, where violence broke out over land acquisition for an expressway, evading policemen on May 11. He was later arrested and released by the UP police.
Faced with an opposition protest in alliance with the angry farmers of Greater Nodia, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on May 12 said the opposition is playing dirty politics and misleading the farmers and instigating violence for political gains.
