BJP blames Nehru for Kashmir crisis

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday said that ‘monumental lapses’ committed by the government of former Congress Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru have led to the present day Kashmir stalemate.

“There were three monumental lapses committed by the Indian Government then headed by Jawaharlal Nehru. One, when millions of refugees came, from […] Pakistan, into India, a suggestion was made to settle some of them in various parts of the country including the state of Jammu and Kashmir,” the BJP said.

The other two “mistakes”, according to the party, were to ascertain “the wishes of the people with regard to the accession of the state into India” and “constitutionalise a separate status for Jammu & Kashmir”.

“India has had to pay for this erroneous vision of Nehru?s government for the past 63 years,” the party said, in a resolution on the Jammu and Kashmir situation passed at the party’s national office-bearers meeting here.
