BJP raises IT notice to Gujarat in RS

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday created a ruckus in the Rajya Sabha over an Income Tax department notice to the BJP-ruled state Gujarat.

Accusing the Centre of targeting BJP-ruled states, Leader of Opposition in the Upper House Arun Jaitley said the Centre was treating Gujarat as ‘enemy terriroty’.

Jaitley said Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi was being targeted, whereas his example should have been emulated in the success he had in bringing investment to the state.

The IT department has sought details from the Narendra Modi government on the nearly 8,000 MoUs it signed with several investors at the 2011 Vibrant Gujarat Summit.

?he MoUs are entered by large national and international corporations. They are bringing investment in one year Rs 23.53 lakh crore is what is promised. It is an unprecedented amount instead of feeling proud and other states must emulate that example we wish them success,” Jaitley said.

The BJP had earlier accused the Congress-led Central government of also using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to settle political scores.

The Rajya Sabha was adjourned till noon over the issue.
