Srinagar : A civilian, critically injured when militants fired at a police patrol in Sopore town in Jammu and Kashmir Sunday afternoon, died of his injuries in a hospital. A police constable was also injured in the attack.
“Abdul Rashid Dar, resident of Rafiabad (Sopore), who was critically injured in today’s militant attack in Iqbal Market, has succumbed to injuries,” a senior police officer told IANS.
Superintendent of Police Syed Imtiyaz Hussain told IANS from Sopore that the incident happened when two police vehicles were caught in a traffic jam in Iqbal Market.
“While the policemen were clearing the traffic jam, militants fired at them. One constable and a civilian were critically injured,” he said.
“Police did not retaliate as the market was crowded with people and retaliatory firing by police could have resulted in vivilian casualties,” he said.
The attackers escaped with the injured constable’s weapon.
Last week, militants fired at a Border Security Force (BSF) vehicle in Srinagar, leaving one trooper killed and two others injured.
