Fire in Indian Navy warship INS Vindhyagiri off Mumbai
Mumbai port on Monday sounded high alert after reports of fire in an Indian Navy’s warship, which had a collision with a Cyprus merchant ship on Sunday, port sources said.
The INS Vindhyagiri, which collided with a container ship MV Nordlake , caught fire early on Monday morning alerting the port officials, who sought assistance from the Mumbai fire brigade.
Initial reports suggested that the fire brigade was called after local efforts to douse the flames failed.
Many sailors were feared stuck inside vessel, they said as many fire tenders rushed to the site of the accident.
The INS Vindhyagiri collided head-on with a Cyprus flag merchant ship, M V Nordlake, near Sunk Rock Lighthouse off Mumbai harbour on Sunday.
There had been no casualties or oil spill, but shipping ministry officials said the incident was serious as it involved the Indian Navy warship.
The warship has naval personnel and some of their family members on board.
They were on a trip on Sunday.
The damaged INS Vindhyagiri, which has reportedly suffered a crack in its hull, was brought to the naval dockyard.
Director-general of shipping S B Agnihotri has ordered an inquiry into the incident in the collision.
