Former Lok Sabha Speaker P. A. Sangma died at 68

New Delhi :  On Friday morning former Lok Sabha speaker P. A. Sangma died of a heart attack at the age of 68 years.

Sangma served the sixteenth Lok Sabha as its speaker from 1996 to 1998. He also remained the chief minister of Meghalaya from 1988 to 1990.

Meanwhile, current Lok Sabha speaker Sumitra Mahajan read an obituary for the departed leader and the house observed a two minute silence before it was adjourned for the day.

Sangma as a self-made leader whose contribution to the development of the northeast was monumental. “Sangma’s tenure as Lok Sabha speaker is unforgettable. His down to earth personality and affable nature endeared him to many,” Modi described.

Sangma born on September 1, 1947 in village Chapahati in Meghalaya, and he graduated from St Anthony’s College at Shillong. He then went to Dibrugarh University in Assam for master’s in international relations. He also has a degree in law.
