Indian new rupee Symbol
India gets its own international symbol for new rupee on Thursday 15th July.
Indian Government announced a contest to create a symbol for the Rupee. During the? Union Budget 2010 Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee mentioned that proposed Symbol would reflect and capture the Indian ethos and culture.
Five Symbols had been short listed and one of them was to be finalized at the Union Cabinet meeting held on 24 June 2010.
However on the request of the finance minister this decision was differed, and a new date for the same was not announced.
Indian Express, a major Indian daily reported on July 15, 2010, that the rupee symbol has been selected by the five member panel, where the design chosen was submitted by Indian Institute of? Technology(IIT) post graduated D. Udaya kumar.
A Finance ministry official said that the symbol was given approval by the Finance ministry as well. The Parallel lines at the top make an allusion to the tricolor Indian flag.
