Indian sportspersons receive grand welcome

New Delhi : Indian sports-persons were accorded a grand welcome as they landed here on Sunday night after their scintillating performance at the Asian Games in the Chinese city of Guangzhou.

The first batch of athletes comprising kabaddi and basketball players, landed at 20:55 hrs at the IGI international airport.

As they came out of the airport they were cheered by hundreds of fans, who had gathered to welcome the Indian contingent, which had put up its best ever performance in the games by winning a record 64 medals, including 14 gold.

Indian Olympic Association joint secretary Lalit Bhanot, who was also Secretary General of the CWG Organizing Committee, received the players.

IOA President Suresh Klamadi, who is facing charges of corruption in Commonwealth Games was not among those, who returned here on Sunday.

India’s legendary sprinter P.T. Usha lauded the athletes.

“I am happy that India produced its best performance at the Asian Games. Athletes really did well, I am happy for that,” she said.
