Jats call off agitation after written assurance

The three-week long agitation by Jat community demanding reservation in government jobs seem to be ending on Saturday following written assurance by the Haryana government.

Reports said that the agitators were preparing to clear the railway tracks after they were satisfied with the assurance from the state government of looking into their demands.

Leaders of the agitating community said they have been reassured that their demands will be met and government notifications to that effect will be out soon.

The leaders had held discussions with representatives of both state and Central governments.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had also expressed its concern over the agitation, which threatened to disrupt essential services to the national capital.

The apex court had earlier this week expressed its disapproval over Haryana and Uttar Pradesh governments tactic support to the protests.

The apex court ordered the state governments to ensure that the protests do not affect essential services, including water service, in the national capital.

Taking up two petitions filed by Delhi Jal Board and Indian Oil Corporation, a Supreme Court bench of justices Altamas Kabir and Dalveer Bhandari directed the governments of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana to ensure that supply of essential commodities to Delhi is not affected.

The Jats have been blocking railway tracks demanding reservation for the community in government jobs.

Hundreds of trains have been cancelled or diverted due to the agitation, causing loss of crores of rupees to the railways and untold problems for the general public.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has already passed order asking the state government to explain its failure to restore road and railway communication even after almost a month of the agitation.
