West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday ordered a probe into phone tapping by the previous Left Front state administration without the permission of the Home Ministry.
“We got this complaint earlier. We will find out who did it and why. We will see that it never happens in future,” said Banerjee after a meeting with the top police officials.
“Those who did it without the permission of the home ministry should be be found out,” she said.
“Phones of criminals and terrorists can be tapped. But here the freedom of people was usurped and phones of government officials, journalists and others were tapped,” she said.
“I have asked for the inquiry report from the police commissioner,” she said.
There were allegations of phone tapping by the Trinamool Congress and from other quarters during the Singur and Nandigram movements by the Left Front government to suppress the voices of opposition.
