No govt wants strong judiciary: SC

The Supreme Court on Friday said no government wants a strong judiciary and the attitude is reflected in the meagre budgetary allocations.

“No government wants a strong judiciary. It is only on paper. Look at the budgetary allocation, it is less than one per cent,” was how the apex court interpreted the government’s attitude towards the judiciary.

Heading the Amar Singh phone-tapping case, a division bench of judges G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly made the observation.

The judges said more courts and personnel was needed to strengthen the judicial system.

The bench lamented the lack of manpower and infrastructure to dish out speedy judgements.
