Open to meeting Modi: British PM David Cameron

New Delhi : British Prime Minister David Cameron Thursday said he was open to meeting all elected leaders, including Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi who is the BJP’s prime ministerial nominee for the 2014 polls.

“Entirely yes…I am open to meeting all elected leaders anyway,” Cameron told CNN-IBN news channel when asked if he was open to meeting Modi.

No meeting with Modi is scheduled during the day long visit of Cameron, who met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in the morning and then flew to Kolkata where he will meet West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the evening. He stopped over in India before flying to Sri Lanka to attend the Commonwealth summit.

Explaining why he was not meeting Modi during this visit, Cameron said: “It’s a short visit. My first priority was to see Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and then I wanted to see Kolkata, so I’ll meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.”

“We have started some relations with Gujarat already. The connection and engagement is there,” he said.

The people of India will decide who becomes their prime minister in 2014, he said.

“In the end it will be for the people of India to decide who they elect,” said Cameron.
