Pakistan summons Indian diplomat over protests outside Delhi mission

Islamabad/New Delhi : Pakistan Wednesday summoned the Indian deputy high commissioner in Islamabad and asked him to ensure security of its diplomatic mission in India in the wake of protests outside the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi.

“Some demonstrators gathered in front of our high commission and Pakistan House (residence of the ambassador) in New Delhi today (Wednesday). The protesters raised slogans against Pakistan,” a Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesperson was quoted as saying by Xinhua.

“We summoned Indian deputy high commissioner to the Foreign Office to stress that protection of Pakistan High Commission and Pakistan House is the responsibility of the Indian government,” Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said in a statement.

The Indian diplomat was summoned to “ensure security of Pakistan House, the Pakistan High Commission, officers and staff of the High Commission,” a source told IANS in New Delhi.

About 170 members of the Youth Congress were detained in New Delhi while marching towards the Pakistan High Commission to protest the killings of five Indian soldiers in Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

Around 200 members of the Youth Congress gathered near the Pakistan High Commission in Chanakyapuri in central Delhi in the afternoon. They climbed police barricades and raised anti-Pakistan slogans.

Police said water cannons were used to disperse the protestors and 175 of them were detained. They were later let off.

Meanwhile, around 40 members of Naya Daur Party handed over a memorandum to the high commission on the soldiers’ killings, said police.
