Rajya Sabha adjourned over promotion quotas bill

New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha was disrupted again Tuesday over a bill for providing reservation to the Scheduled Castes (SC) and the Schedule Tribes (ST) in promotions in government jobs.

The upper house was first adjourned till noon, and then till 2 p.m. over the issue, as members of the Samajwadi Party protested against a constitutional amendment bill to provide reservation in job promotions.

The bill, which has been brought after protests from the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party, provides for reservation to the SCs and the STs in promotion in government jobs.

As the house met at noon after losing its question hour, members from the SP benches trooped near the chairman’s podium raising slogans against the bill.

Amid the din, Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien adjourned the upper house till 2 p.m.

The bill was listed in the business schedule of the Rajya Sabha.
