SC orders compensation for all Nadigram victims

The West Bengal government was on Wednesday directed by the Supreme Court to pay compensation to all victims of Nandigram police firing in 2007.

A division bench, headed by Justice RV Raveendran, asked the state government o pay compensation to all victims (injured or raped), irrespective of their involvement in violence against police.

The state government had stated that it had paid compensation only to those who were not involved in violence against the police.

Fourteen people were killed and over 100 injured on March 14, 2007, when police opened fire on a crowd protesting land acquisition for a special economic zone in Nandigram.

Earlier on Tuesday, the apex court had questioned the Central Bureau of Investigations (CBI) unwillingness to hand over a copy of its investigation report to the state government.

The Calcutta High Court had asked the CBI to probe the Nandigram firing incident, in which top police officials of the state are also likely to be indicted.
