SC refuses to hear plea on Bhatta Parsaul
The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear a petition seeking Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into Uttar Pradesh government?s alleged atrocities at Bhatta Parsaul village.
A bench of justices G S Singhvi and C K Prasad told senior counsel U Lalit, who filed the petition on behalf of the farmers, to take the issue to Allahabad High Court.
Lalit had said that Uttar Pradesh Police is behind unleashing violence in Bhatta Parsaul over ?forcible land acquisitions?.
He said the UP government is not taking any steps to protect the agitating farmers.
After hearing Lalit?s arguments, the apex court said it cannot entertain the petition as various human rights organisations like National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), National Commission for Women (NCW) and National Commission for Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes are already involved in the case.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reportedly accused Uttar Pradesh Police for encouraging Mayawati government?s atrocities in Bhatta Parsaul village of Greater Noida.
A seven-member team of NHRC, led by senior Superintendent of Police Viplav Kumar, visited the Bhatta Parsaul village on May 25.
According to Times Now news channel, the NHRC in its preliminary report said: ?Prima facie, it appears that excesses were committed by the Uttar Pradesh police in dealing with the situation.?
?Some villagers have come forward with their complaints suggesting human rights violations, however, protecting their identity and completion of investigation top most priority at the moment,? said the report.
Earlier, on Saturday, the National Commission for Women (NCW) said women were molested and stripped in Bhatta Parsaul village and a CBI probe should be ordered into the atrocities.
The farmers of Bhatta Parsaul are agitating against land acquisition by the UP government for an expressway, demanding higher compensation.
“The situation is serious and evidence is being destroyed. The accused are romaing free. People fled the villages while women were stripped and molested by policemen in large numbers,” said NCW chairperson Yasmeen Abrar.
She said a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe should be ordered.
Claims of rape and murder of farmers and their womenfolk in Greater Noida’s Bhatta Parsaul by Rahul Gandhi got some corroboration from the National Commission for Women (NCW) after its chairperson said women were indeed stripped and molested by policemen.
She said a final report would be presented soon with all details.
The NCW remarks came as a shot in the arm for Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi was in a spot after he alleged “without proofs” that women were raped and villagers killed and their ashes were found in the villages of the region where a farmers’ agitation against land acquisition and higher compensation led to violence and killings.
While the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh trashed the allegations of Rahul and even his party Congress tried to defend Gandhi by passing the blame on media for “misquoting” him, the latest findings of NCW came as a reprieve for the young politician who even took a farmers’ delegation to the Prime Minister and made the allegations before him.
The National Commission for Women had taken suo moto cognizance of the incident wherein it was reported atrocities on women have been committed by the local administration of Gram Bhatta Parsaul of the Gautam Buddha Nagar district of UP.
