Congress chief and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday came out in strong defence of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, saying that Singh was ?100 per cent overboard? in the 2G scam.
Speaking out for the first time on the 2G Spectrum scam, Gandhi slammed the Opposition for targeting the prime minister for the scam and said it was ?shameful?.
She maintained that Singh was completely ?overboard? as far as the scam was concerned and added that the Congress had won back to power in New Delhi in 2009 under Singh when the Opposition had levied corruption charges against the prime minister.
Attacking the Opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on its alleged inaction against corruption tainted leaders, Gandhi said the Congress was always swift to act against its leaders with any slur on them.
She cited the examples of former Union ministers Shashi Tharoor and Natwar Singh and former Maharashtra chief minister Ashok Chavan against whom the Congress was quick to crack the whip.
?You have seen how we deal with corruption. We take immediate action. We asked Shashi Tharoor to resign. The chief minister of Maharashtra was removed immediately after the US president’s visit,? she said.
?Compare the action taken by the Congress (on corruption) with that by other parties like the BJP. It is for the people to judge, and they will judge us more positively,? Gandhi added, with an apparent reference to BJP?s failure to sack Karnataka chief minister BS Yeddyurappa who is facing allegations of involvement in a land scam.
