SRCC students want Modi as next prime minister

New Delhi : After hearing Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi’s speech on rebranding India to make it a global power, some students of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) said he should be the next prime minister.

“In our country it usually takes a decade to change a policy, but going by his speech where he talked about speed and skill, he has the potential to bring about a change and deserves to be the next prime minister,” said Abhishek Virmani, 19, a B.Com. (Honours) student at the college.

Mitali Gupta, 18, said Modi had done “good work” in Gujarat and he should be given a chance to emulate the same on a national level. “He deserves it,” she said.

For Neeraj Sejwal, 19, Modi is the only prime ministerial candidate among the current lot of leaders in the country.

“He has proved that he can deliver and he only needs an opportunity. We need rapid and steady economic development if we want to become a superpower and he is the right person for the job,” said Sejwal.

However, 19-year-old Payal Jain said Modi needs to reach out more to the minorities in his state if he wants support from all sections of the society.

“He needs to do more for the riot victims. Only then would he be acceptable to the whole country as a prime minister,” Jain said.

As Modi spoke at Delhi University’s second oldest college, hundreds of Left-wing protestors shouted slogans against him for his role in the 2002 communal riots in the state. However, many ABVP activists also thronged the site and raised pro-Modi slogans and welcomed him.

In an hour-long speech at the SRCC, Modi underlined that the government’s job was not to run businesses but to provide good governance, and he was doing so in Gujarat.
