One killed in Tamil Nadu train accident

Chennai  :  One person was killed and 33 others were injured Wednesday when 11 coaches of the Muzaffarpur-Yashwantpur Express derailed in Tamil Nadu.

The accident occurred at Chitheri near Arakkonam, 60 km from Chennai, at about 6 a.m.

According to Southern Railway, one person died at the spot. Six of the injured had suffered grievous injuries.

It was not immediately clear what caused the train to jump the track. The train was going from Muzaffarpur in Bihar to Yashwantpur in Karnataka.

The accident is the second in the Chitheri segment in two years. In 2011, 10 people were killed when an electric multiple unit (EMU) train rammed into the Arakkonam-Katpadi passenger train.

Eight express trains were cancelled following Wednesday’s derailment.
