10 killed in illegal Egyptian archaeological dig in Egypt

At least 10 people were killed and two injured when the walls of an unauthorised archaeological dig collapsed in Egypt, police said.

According to police, a man invited 11 of his relatives to help him dig under his house for archaeological finds in Nag Hammadi, 80 km from Luxor, the EGYnews internet TV portal reported Monday.

The group had dug some 150 metres under the house when the soil caved in, burying most of them.

Rescuers at the site pulled out two survivors. However, rescue attempts were hampered by the collapse of the house over the digging site.
