An earthquake in Papua New Guinea

Washington : An earthquake measuring 6.9-magnitude rocked Papua New Guinea on Thursday, the US Geological Survey confirmed.

But there was no need to panic about a tsunami as the tremor struck at a depth of 32 kms, 37 kms northeast of Kandrian in the New Britain region, it said.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in a bulletin said “no destructive widespread tsunami threat exists.”

No immediate damage had been reported so far.
